As you can see there is a good amount of options to choose from. Each of these wallets has a different functionality and features. It is a good idea to think about how you will be using the wallet. If you are a person who is very active, a mobile wallet would make sense due to the ease of access. On the other hand, if you are a person who values security the most, the best ZenCash wallet for you might be a hardware one.
02. Common Features of ZenCash Wallets
The whole ZenCash (Horizen) project is focused on privacy and anonymity. The aim is to be able to hold coins and make transactions without anyone being able to see the amount that you hold and from where the transaction originated. The blockchain itself is open-source, which in turn makes all official wallets the same. Additionally, a large portion of them are Hierarchical Deterministic meaning they have a master seed, from which private and public keys are created. This is a very major layer of security that in the future will be a standard among all wallets.
Security and Privacy
I would like to talk about maybe the most important features of almost any cryptocurrency, especially in this case – ZenCash. Security and Privacy (Anonymity) are becoming maybe the most sought-after functions of any blockchain network. ZEN wallets possess a few features like that and I have listed them below with a short explanation.
Open Source
An open-source wallet is one that has its core code open and widely available to the public for double checking and authenticating. Almost all wallets for ZEN are like that but for the sake of examples, I would like to mention the Ledger Nano S and Trezor model T.
Disclose Information
This is a function of the wallet that you can use to carry out private transactions and hold coins without disclosing any information to anyone else. A good example of wallets that can do that are the official ZenCash client, Horizen and Ledger Nano S.
Hierarchical Deterministic (HD)
These types of wallets have the function of creating a twelve-word unique master key seed, from which private and public keys can be generated. Such wallets are Ledger Nano S, Trezor Model T, and Cool WalletS.
Secure ZenCash Wallets to Consider
Wallets for ZenCash Secure Node and Super Node
In the Horizen (ZenCash) network, you are given the opportunity to earn passive income with the official wallet in two ways that resemble masternode methods.
The first method Is by creating a Secure Node. They provide additional services to support the network and in order to be considered a Secure node and not just any other type of standard one, it needs to be online 92% and have at least 42 ZEN in its wallet address.
The second method is by running a Super Node, again with the help of the official wallet. Super nodes are the giant pillars of the network that provide the most important services. They are what manages the Secure nodes, the payment schedule for them and miners, host multiple services on sidechains etc. In order to set up a Super node, it will need to have a minimum uptime of 96% and at least 500 ZEN in its address.
Transaction Fee Management
Something that you should always take in mind is the transaction fees in the network. Depending on the wallet features you will be able to either adjust the fees or not. For example, with wallets like Horizen, ZENCash and Ledger Nano S, the user interface will show you the recommended fee, but you are free to adjust it to whatever value you deem adequate. On the other hand, most other wallets, like the ones on exchanges, do not offer that feature. They automatically calculate the fees and charge your account.
Fee Control | How Does It Work? | Supported By |
---|---|---|
Full control with suggested fees. | The wallet shows the recommended fees and you can adjust them manually | Horizen, ZENCash, Ledger Nano S |
No Control | The fees are predetermined, and you can’t change anything manually. | Most of the Exchanges have no fee control. (e.g. Binance, Bittrex) |
03.FAQ
-
Does the Horizen team have other products except for the ZEN coin?
Yes, they do have. What they develop is mostly dApps based on the same privacy technology. They made ZenChat, which is a platform for secure messaging, ZenPub, which is an anonymous document publishing app and also a Domain fronting platform called ZenHide.
04.About ZenCash
Formally known as ZenCash, Horizen is the rebranded, well known blockchain and cryptocurrency that provides innovative privacy and anonymity to anyone active on its network with the idea to become a new age economy solution for money and media. With the help of the zk-SNARKS protocol, TLS integration, domain fronting, encryption, and distributed publishing, one can manage the transparency of their digital assets and activity.
Horizen is a fork of the ZClassic network, which in turn was a split in the chain of ZCash. Both ZCL and ZEC are originally Bitcoin clones, talk about a family tree. The founders of ZenCash is Rob Viglione and Rofl Versluis, who decided that there will be absolutely no pre-mining and no ICO when the project was created. Currently, Horizen is listed on some of the biggest exchanges in the world like Binance, Bittrex, Cryptopia, and even OKEx.
If you take a look at their 2018 roadmap, you can see some pretty ambitious goals that have been set. The development team uses the Trello platform, where they can ask the community to propose and vote for future updates and changes. As far as I can see their main goals right now are connected with the core blockchain code, privacy features, research, and user experience.
