02. Common Features of Zcash Wallets

When digital assets and tools for managing them are used together, the common features looked for are mostly security and privacy. The majority of Zcash clients have related essential options like HD, Tor Support, Multiplatform support and so on. Managing more than one coin is also preferred by the user, which is the nature of Jaxx, Exodus and Ledger for example.

When talking about transparency, transactions in the ZAC network can be modified via zk-SNARKs, a kind of zero-knowledge proof (where they are “shielded” and use private address a.k.a. z-addr) or “transparent” and use public addresses a.k.a. t-addr. Bear in mind that most of the wallets don’t support z-addr and are similar to the BTC addresses visible publicly in the blockchain. A piece of advice, for executing private transactions use the Official Zcash wallet. More on the security and privacy check the following paragraph.

Security and Privacy

The private nature of ZEC enables you to perform an untraceable transaction, but only via their official wallet. What is more, it is available only as a desktop type on Linux operating systems. This is the perfect choice for those of you who really value privacy as a feature. In case you want to do mainly daily transactions, the team behind Zcash suggests wallets like Exodus, Jaxx, Trezor and Ledger Nano S. This is a great gesture by the people created the official client, admitting how limited their product is. Other features are listed and explained in the following lines:

Multisignature

Several brands provide the opportunity for every transaction to be signed from multiple users before it gets broadcasted to the network. Some of them are Trezor, Bitgo, CoinPayments.

Hierarchical Deterministic (HD)

Your keys are generated from one point only, the seed. It is easier from a safety point of view as well because you need to keep only one file protected. More and more ZEC wallets are implementing this feature like Ledger Nano S and Jaxx.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

It asks you to enter private information like an email or SMS confirmation to sign into your wallet. Good examples are Ledger,Trezor and BitGo.

Transaction Fee Management

Fees are needed in order for each transaction to be processed and included in a block. All that is done by the miners, who get paid for their services. The default fee for sending Zcash is 0.0001 ZEC. This compared to the rest of the coins is much lower. That is one of the reasons why ZEC is the best option fee wise.

Fee Control How Does It Work? Supported By
Full Control With Suggested Fees The wallet shows the recommended fees and you can adjust them manually Zcash CLI
Suggested Fees Without Option for Manual Control  You have 2 or 3 options of fees and you can only choose between them Jaxx
No Control   The fees are predetermined, and you can’t change anything manually Most of the Exchanges have no fee control (e.g. Binance)

03.FAQ

  • Are there official wallets for Zcash compatible with Windows, MacOS or Mobile?

Currently, the only compatible OS is Linux. The Zcash Company don’t have the resources to review software and don’t build one themselves. That is why before downloading and installing any Windows, MacOS or Mobile products, make sure they are provided from ZEC’s legit third-party partners.

  • What is the procedure, if my transaction is not mined?

Best check if the transaction is returned back to the sending address. Usually, not processed ones expire in about 10 minutes or 20 blocks. Then they don’t disappear but are sent back.

  • What can cause a transaction problem?

The reasons can be а loss of connection, too low of a transaction fee, an overloaded network or too many data actions need processing.

04.About Zcash

ZEC started as a cryptographic add-on to BTC. Its first steps were in 2013 as Zerocoin, created by Christina Garman, Ian Miers, Matthew Green and Aviel D. Rubin. The original project acts like an “Add-On” to BTC, allowing transactions which cannot be linked together. This is possible, because it doesn’t introduce any new centralized elements into the network or use laundering. This way coins are spent through intermediaries to hide the root wallet address of the purchaser.

The team involved truly believe, that if enough of the BTC network adopt their idea and approach, the desired truly private payments might turn into a significant upgrade to BTC’s code. Furthermore, such actions can be integrated into the cryptocurrency and iron out what large numbers of users see as severe privacy defects in the current implementation. Just like BTC, ZEC has a fixed supply of 21 million units in total.
